Saturday evening was the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an event held yearly by the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA). The dinner began in 1921 during Warren G. Harding’s administration as a way to promote journalism and the media (WHCA). While Harding never attended, prior to Trump’s presidency, the dinner has been attended by the president for 36 straight years (NPR). Since Trump views the media as the enemy, he has declined to attend both dinners that have occurred during his presidency. He held a campaign-style rally in Washington, Michigan, while other members of his staff attended the dinner and publicly complained about it.

Michelle Wolf,  the host of the new Netflix original show The Break with Michelle Wolf, was the comedian asked to host the dinner by the WHCA, however some of her comments have been viewed as controversial. Wolf asked the audience to respond with “How broke is he?” when she said “Trump is so broke” (C-SPAN). Her answers to that question ranged from “he has to fly failed business class” to “he had to borrow money from the Russians and now he’s compromised and susceptible to blackmail and possibly responsible for the collapse of the Republic.”

Some of Wolf’s more controversial comments were directed towards the women in the Trump administration, particularly White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Wolf said “She burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.” Some have interpreted this comment as an attack on her looks. Co-host of Morning Joe Mika Brzezinski tweeted “Watching a wife and mother be humiliated on national television for her looks is deplorable.” Wolf responded saying “I complimented her eye makeup and her ingenuity of materials.”

President Trump called Wolf “filthy” and said she “totally ‘bombed,'” but she stated, “I wouldn’t change a single word that I said” (NPR). After this year’s dinner, President Trump has now called for the dinner to be “put to rest, or start over!” It remains to be seen if any changes will be made to this tradition.
