Since school shootings have become more common, students need to know what to do in a school shooing. Most people are unprepared for the event of a school shooting. So, to inform people on what to do in these situations, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security made a video called RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.

According to the Huffington Postthe first thing students and teachers should do to prepare for a school shooting is to train and prepare in advance.  To prepare, students should locate windows and exits. If a shooter comes into a school, people don’t have time to think of where to go. They need to save themselves.

If possible, the best thing to do is to run. People should leave all of their belongings behind. When a person’s life is in danger, their life is more important than their phone. They should help others escape if possible, but shouldn’t let those people slow them down. As soon as they can, they should stop others from entering the building and call 911.

When evacuation isn’t possible, a victim in a school shooting should hide. Find a room or a good hiding place and lock/barricade the door. Turn off the lights and close blinds if there is a window in the room. People should silence their cell phone and remain as quiet as possible. The hiding place should be out of the shooter’s view and able to provide protection from bullets.

If the above methods don’t work, then people should fight the shooter.  ABC News says that in the case of a school shooting, people should do whatever possible to save themselves and others.Anything can be a weapon, such as hand sanitizer, computers, chairs, etc.

According to USA Today, since 1990, there has been 22 shootings at elementary and secondary schools where two or more people have been killed, not counting those who commit suicide.
